Staff Development

The E-Learning Division focuses on supporting staff members in the use of technologies in their teaching and learning. This is primarily done through a series of hands-on workshops, one-on-one training, seminars and “Show & Tell” presentations. This combination ensures we provide the best possible training to staff in the faculty.

A total of 36 e-learning and IT training workshops were organised and run by EDU at FHS during 2015 attended by 200 attendees. The training included Excel, Prezi, Advanced MSWord, Google Classroom, Google Drive and Dropbox, Video recording, Remote teaching with Video Conferencing, iPad and Tablet workshops, mobile devices in Higher education and certain Vula tools. These were done in conjunction with external partners from DigiCape (Apple), Google Sub-Saharan Africa, Grove (Google provider) and ICTS (Microsoft).

An announcement to all staff members are sent regular via the faculty infomailer and Vula providing details of training workshops and seminars. Staff members are encouraged  to sign up to register their attendance, either via the FHS Staff 2016 Vula site, or via a google form.

Staff members have shown particular interest in the Google Classroom workshop which was presented by representatives of Google in South Africa. Evaluation completed by attendees indicated that workshops are useful, but that training sessions should be longer or over two sessions so that more practice in new skills could be covered.

Staff can sign up for workshops via the FHS Staff 2016 Vula site, under “Signup for w/s”. If you cannot access the FHS Staff Vula 2016 site please e-mail to gain access.
